Strep Throat (Streptococcal pharyngitis) Disclaimer
Strep throat is a more serious concern, and occurs most commonly in the late fall, winter, and early spring among
children ages 5 to 15. (It also can occur, however, in younger children and adults.) Infants may experience a thick yellow,
or green, mucus running from the nose, a low-grade fever, fussiness, irritability, and a reduced appetite. Children (age
1-3) may complain of a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, reduced appetite, crankiness, and swollen lymph nodes. Older
children often have high fevers, painfully sore throats, severe difficulty in swallowing, and pus. Please consult your
physician.
Common symptoms include: sore throat, red throat, white patches in throat, difficulty swallowing, fever with sudden
onset, tender swollen lymph nodes, discomfort, nausea, loss of appetite, rash.
Other symptoms may include neck pain, nasal discharge, nasal congestion, muscle pain, joint stiffness, headache and
abnormal taste sensations.
Complications may include ear infection, sinusitis, mastoiditis, peritonsillar abscess, rheumatic fever,
glomerulonephritis, and scarlet fever.

What to Do for Colds and Flu
When I feel a cold or flu coming on, or when someone in the house is coming down with a cold or flu, or when I am
going to travel on an airplane, I take preventive actions to boost my immune system. I will start with an herbal defense
formula, and if I start feeling sick, I will include Vitamin A and significant amounts of buffered Vitamin C. (For females of
child bearing age, I am perhaps overly cautious, and exclude the Vitamin A.) Some of the herbs that are included in the
herbal formula include echinacea, garlic, olive leaf and propolis. Various mushroom extracts also are included.
